Granny’s Bonnet and the Summer Solstice

Columbine pink

We’re currently being drenched under the watery weight of Tropical Depression Bill as he expends his energy over the Ohio River Valley. And although we’ve had our share of rain this week, all the denizens of the garden could use a good soaking as we lean into the the maw of Summer tomorrow, the Solstice, the longest day of the year.Columbine blue1

The Columbine (or Granny’s Bonnet or Aquilegia) will soon be finished, making way for more heat-loving flowers. But, my-oh-my, how their beauty graces us while they’re here.Columbine fuschiaThese little darlings do their level-best to inspire us with their soft beauty and delicate features. Walking among these graceful dancers reminds us that despite all the ugliness and mean-spiritedness in the world, there is loveliness and goodness and kindness, as well.

  9. I don’t want to jinx it but I think we’ve been pretty lucky with the mix of rain & sun so far…are you guys on the drought side or the flood side of the equation out there? PS, Happy Fourth!!!

Happy to hear you’re getting your fair shair of sun and rain. We’ve had a good mix so far, too, but it seems to come in waves…several days of rain then several days of sun. The garden seems happy, so we’ll take it! As if we had an alternative 😉 And a happy Summer to you! Cheers, Ben

  10. Yes, indeed. I like your columbine colours. Mine produce new shades and colour combinations each spring.

  11. Beautiful columbines. Beautiful photography! 🙂
