What is small plot gardening? What do you grow? Whatever it is, it sounds lovely. (and..if I may be so bold, is that you in the photo? a great photo! you look like sea captain in an old painting my dad used to have…)
We call the garden beds we have tucked around our suburban home “small plot gardening.” Raised beds and vegetables interspersed with flowers, making the most of our limited space. It seems most of our efforts are dedicated to tomatoes because we love them so and there are so many interesting varieties not available in stores. But we like to try lots of other veggies too, old favorites and “new to us” varieties we stumble across.
And that is indeed me in the photo. Thanks! 🙂
I try to grow tomatoes every year…and a few other veggies. But between the hungry bunnies and slugs, I never get to eat much of it!! I look forward to seeing more of your gardening efforts.

Hi Benjamin, please forgive me for taking so long to respond to your nice response to my blog.
I was wondering if you have found any books by Monty Don yet. There is a lot about him and by him on the web, of course, but what I have enjoyed most is the book that accompanies the fabulous TV series he did for the BBC: Around the World in 80 Gardens (first broadcast in 2006, I think). The book can be read without the watching the film but it is even better read in conjunction with it.
In the series, he filmed and wrote about nine North American gardens, all of which I loved and vowed to visit myself if ever I return to the US. (I am sure you and your fellow American gardeners would enjoy that segment.) Don writes superbly and has such empathy for gardens and gardeners that anything he writes is worth reading.
