Summer Sweetness

Peaches

There are lots of sensory delights this time of year

An icy cold beer after mowing the lawn.

Strawberry shortcake, not that manufactured spongy stuff, but real shortcake,

More like a Cat Head Biscuit, smothered with lots of real whipped cream.

But for my money, there’s little better than a perfectly ripe peach,

Eaten over the kitchen sink while looking out at the birds in the backyard,

Juices dripping down my chin, my wrist, my arm.

That is summer to me, summed up quite nicely,

And as my grandma always said,

I could eat them ‘til I founder.

 Happy First Day of Summer!

What are your favorite joys of Summer?

I’m with your grandmother! Oh, peaches!

  2. A mouth watering picture. I think I need to find a peach!

  3. I can’t decide between peaches and fresh corn on the cob. Maybe Peaches and Cream Corn. Happy summer!

  4. Cathy says:

Oh yes, nothing like a really ripe peach… or strawberries still warm from the sunshine… Happy summer Ben!

  5. I know exactly what you mean! The smell and taste is quite simply .. Divine 😃

I’ve never heard of Cat Head Biscuit but have eaten a few biscuits in my day. Nothing like the juicy splendor of peaches.

  7. I had a great craft beer tonight, strawberries are in season, but there are not going to be a peach crop this year in NH. They were all wiped out when we had a bad freeze on Valentine’s Day. So, please, have another peach for me. 🙂

  8. Mark says:

Yes, it’s a wonderful time of year with the strawberries and peaches and the sun taking so long to set.

  9. KerryCan says:

Yes to beer, strawberries, and peaches. And soft ice cream at a place only open in the summer. (And I like that your grandmother said “founder” instead of “flounder”!) 😉

  10. Frangipani and Poincianas, it is like a foreign language!

  11. My favorite summer meal–Tortellini with pesto sauce made from fresh basil, just-picked tomatoes, and peach shortcake made with locally grown peaches! Peaches are the very definition of summer to me!

  12. Benjamin = a kooky question, have you ever heard of using Beautyberry foliage to deter mosquitoes? This is from northern Mississippi, I think??

Y’know, my Granny used to plant those along with citronella and claimed they kept the ‘skeeters away. And I think I did read an article (can’t remember the publication, Horticulture, perhaps) a few years ago that backed up her claim. So many of the old folk applications for plants seem to hold true! I had forgotten about that, so thanks for reminding me. I think now we’ll be planting some on our deck in the near future 🙂

mmmmm. Delicious! It’s been hit or miss for peaches around here, but when you finally get one of those chin-dripping explosions of sweet flavor 🙂

  14. Sure looks like a good peach
